Why Corpshore

Privacy and data governance

Compliance is a set of obligations. Governance is how you actually run to them day to day. This page sets out the framework that governs data on an engagement, how cross-border transfer is made transparent under PIPEDA and the data residency options open to you, including keeping data in Canada only.

Data on a Corpshore engagement is governed through purpose limitation, role-based access and documented safeguards, within your platforms and governance. Under PIPEDA, accountability for personal information stays with the operation holding your relationship, so any cross-border transfer is documented before go-live. You can choose data residency options, including keeping data in Canada only, with regulated tasks kept in Canada.

The governance framework

Good data governance is boring by design, and that is the point. It means a small number of clear rules applied consistently rather than a policy binder no one reads. On a Corpshore engagement the framework rests on three principles. Data is used only for the purposes you have defined, which is purpose limitation. Access is granted by role and limited to the data a task actually needs, which is least privilege. And the safeguards protecting the data are written down, proportionate to its sensitivity and reviewable, rather than assumed.

Work is performed within your platforms and under your governance wherever possible, not copied into ours. That keeps the data under your control, your monitoring and your retention rules, with our team operating inside the environment you already secure. Accountability for personal information stays with the operation that holds your relationship, which under PIPEDA is where it is supposed to sit, so there is a single accountable party rather than responsibility diffusing across a chain of subcontractors.

Cross-border transfer, made transparent

Some engagements are delivered entirely in Canada and no transfer question arises. Others use the hybrid blend, where a Canadian core team handles the sensitive work and global-network capacity supports high volume work that does not need to be Canadian. Where any data is supported from outside Canada, the transfer is structured and documented before go-live rather than left to chance or discovered later.

Structuring a transfer means being explicit about four things: what categories of data leave Canada, to which locations, under what contractual safeguards and with what limits. Adjudicative and regulated tasks stay in Canada. High volume, low-sensitivity work can be supported from the network under written safeguards that bind the receiving location to the same standard. The position is written down, shared with your team and reflected in the contract, so there is no gap between what was agreed and what happens in practice. Under PIPEDA the accountability does not transfer with the data, which is precisely why the position is documented to your review rather than assumed.

Data residency options, including Canadian-only

Residency is a choice you make with us, not a default we impose. There are three broad options and we help you pick the one that fits the sensitivity of the work and the expectations of your own customers and regulators.

Canadian-only residency

Data is processed and kept in Canada, and in Quebec specifically where you require it, with no part of the work supported from outside the country. This is the option for the most sensitive, regulated or residency-bound work.

North American residency

Data stays within North America, which suits US buyers who need the data to remain on the continent under a familiar privacy regime without a strict Canada-only constraint.

Documented hybrid

A Canadian core handles sensitive and regulated work while defined high volume, low-sensitivity tasks are supported from the global network under written safeguards, with the categories, destinations and limits documented before go-live.

What this is and is not

This page is general information to help you scope the data question early, not legal advice and not a substitute for your own privacy counsel or a signed data processing agreement. The specifics of any engagement, including the exact residency, transfer and safeguard commitments, are set out in the contract and its schedules and reviewed by both sides. What we commit to here is transparency: the position is documented and shared before go-live, never assumed after it.

Frequently asked questions

Can we keep all our data in Canada?

Yes. Canadian-only residency means data is processed and kept in Canada, and in Quebec specifically where you require it, with no part of the work supported from outside the country. It is the option for the most sensitive, regulated or residency-bound work, and the arrangement is set out in the contract rather than assumed.

How does Corpshore govern access to our data?

Access is granted by role and limited to the data a task actually needs, which is least privilege, and work is performed within your platforms and governance wherever possible rather than copied into ours. Data is used only for the purposes you have defined, and the safeguards protecting it are documented and proportionate to its sensitivity.

Who is accountable for our data under PIPEDA?

Accountability for personal information stays with the operation that holds your relationship, which is where PIPEDA places it. Any global-network location supporting the work is bound by written safeguards to the same standard, and the cross-border transfer position is documented to your review, so responsibility does not diffuse across a chain of subcontractors.

How is a cross-border transfer handled if we use the hybrid model?

It is structured and written down before go-live. We specify what categories of data leave Canada, to which locations, under what contractual safeguards and with what limits. Adjudicative and regulated tasks stay in Canada, and any network location is bound to the same standard, with the position reflected in the contract you review.

What residency options do we actually have?

Three broad options: Canadian-only residency for the most sensitive work, North American residency for data that must stay on the continent without a strict Canada-only constraint, and a documented hybrid where a Canadian core handles sensitive work and defined low-sensitivity tasks are supported from the network under written safeguards. We help you choose based on sensitivity and your own obligations.

Is this data governance page legally binding?

No. It is general information to help you scope the data question early. The specific residency, transfer and safeguard commitments for an engagement are set out in the contract and its schedules and reviewed by your own privacy counsel and ours. What we commit to here is that the position is documented and shared before go-live.
